Puget Sound Moving Helping to Fight Hunger in Seattle by Joining Forces with Move for Hunger

November 29, 2022

Did you know that when you go to bed tonight, one in five children will also be going to bed with empty bellies? While this is disturbing, what is even more shocking is that approximately 40% of all food ends up in landfills.

However, thanks to organizations, such as Move for Hunger, this waste is being reduced, and people who were formerly hungry can enjoy going to bed full.

These are two of the reasons that Puget Sound Moving & Storage has decided to join forces with Move for Hunger. The goal is to encourage those clients who are moving to donate their food, before leaving the area. This ensures it doesn’t go to waste or spoil during the move and that it gets into the hands of people who need it, rather than being left in landfills.

About Move for Hunger

Move for Hunger is now considered one of the largest year-round service programs for ending hunger around the nation. It is located throughout the U.S. and growing steadily by joining with more and more moving companies.

The process for participating in this includes calling one of the movers that are working with Move for Hunger and scheduling a time for them to come and pick up your non-perishable food items before your move and deliver them to local food banks.

What began in 2009 has grown by leaps and bounds in the past several years, with over seven million pounds having been collected and delivered to those in need by 2016.

The Hunger Epidemic in Seattle

Between the period of 2008 to 2011, the number of hungry families in the state of Washington grew from approximately 88,000 to 163,000. There were only six other states that had hunger growth rates higher than Washington.

Today, hunger in Seattle and Washington as a whole is above the national average. In 2011, 15.4% of households reported some level of food insecurity, which means they regularly struggled to get enough food for their family.

These facts alone highlight the importance of getting food into the hands of people who need it, rather than sending it to the landfills.

Puget Sound Moving – Hoping to Make a Difference

Each year, Puget Sound Moving, a local Seattle moving company, work to move thousands of people and family into and out of Seattle. They have seen first-hand the food waste that often occurs. By joining the efforts of Move for Hunger, they hope to make a difference and reduce the number of hungry children and adults in the area. They are ready to take hunger head-on.
